September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month across Canada ... ... and it’s a time when Big Brother Big Sister agencies work hard to promote their programs in their communities, with a view to recruiting new volunteers. Research conducted in Canada and the U.S. has shown evidence of the following outcomes for children in our traditional Big Brother Big Sister program: - mentored children are less likely to lose their temper when they get angry and show greater self-reliance than non-mentored children
- mentored children were 46% less likely to initiate alcohol and other drug use than non-mentored children
- mentored children had more favourable attitudes toward school and better overall academic performance than non-mentored children. They also skipped half as many days of school.
- mentored children are more likely to step in to stop an argument than non-mentored children
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orillia & District supports over 150 children annually in mentoringrelationships. We also have over 20 boys and girls still waiting for that special friend to share a little magic in their lives. Please help us spread the word. Your small effort could be the difference in matching one more child in our community with a caring adult friend. Thank you for your help.
Won't you share a little magic ? . . . . . . and help us help our kids!
